The New Mississippi River Bridge - Did You Know?
DID YOU KNOW???? **** The total cost of the new Mississippi River Bridge Project is estimated at $670 Million. It is the equivalent to one-dollar bills laid end to end circulating the equator more than two and a half times. **** In August 2004 William Perkins and Russ Reike, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, gave Rep. Jerry Costello (D-IL) petitions with over 4,000 signatures supporting the naming of the new bridge "Veteran's Memorial Bridge". This effort was supported by U.S. Rep John Simpkus (R-IL) and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn. The Missouri State Legislature voted on Aug. 28, 2005 to name the bridge after Pres. Ronald Regan. The New Mississippi Bridge Project - Did You Know?
DID YOU KNOW? **** With a main span of 1,500 feet, this bridge will be the third-longest cable stayed bridge in the United States, the other two being the John J. DID YOU KNOW??? ***** The new Mississippi River Bridge is the first being built to connect downtown St Louis and Southern Illinois in more than 40 years. **** The cable stay portion of the bridge will be just over four football fields in length. **** Concrete does not dry; it cures. Did You Know?? The main span of the bridge will use more thas 50,000 cubic yards of concrete - enough to build a sidewalk from St. Louis to Springfield, Illinois and back (200 miles). It will take about 6,250 trucks to haul all that concrete. ********* The main span will require more than 8 million pounds of reinforcing steel - the weight equivalent of 2,716 cars.
